Kitten Lady’s Tips for Showing Cats You Care

Looking for ways to support your local animal shelters beyond volunteering and fostering? Cat’s Pride has partnered with kitten rescuer, humane educator and New York Times bestselling author Hannah Shaw, the go-to “Kitten Lady,” to share tips on how you can show cats you care right from the comfort of your couch.

In addition to these tips, you can always help animals in need through the Cat’s Pride Litter for Good program. Join the Cat’s Pride Club here and nominate your local shelter to receive litter donations.

Take a few minutes to look up the local animal shelters and cat rescue groups in your area. Follow the organizations on social media, and when you see them posting about an adoptable cat, click “share!” You’ll make a big difference by boosting visibility among your network of friends and family!

Have a birthday coming up? Celebrating a special day? Ask your friends to chip in for your favorite local cat rescue! There’s no occasion too big or too small to turn into a fundraising opportunity, and social media tools make it easy for anyone to add a “donate” button for a nonprofit of their choice. You can even sweeten the deal by offering a fun incentive for people who donate, like a silly drawing, or even a special haiku written just for their cat!

If you’d like to help shelter cats but you aren’t able to adopt, consider giving fostering a try! You can provide a temporary home to a litter of kittens, a mama and her babies, or even an adult cat who just needs a safe space to be for a few weeks. Fostering is a short-term commitment with a long-term impact, and it’s something anyone can learn to do. Reach out to your local shelters and rescues and ask how to get started!

Crafters, unite! Did you know that shelters and rescues often need supplies that can be handmade? You can get creative and make items like baby blankets, crocheted cat beds, DIY cat toys, and even winter shelters for community cats. Ask your local organizations what kinds of items they’d like to have and start getting crafty!

Have you ever seen community cats roaming in your neighborhood? Do your part by making sure they’re spayed and neutered! The majority of kittens entering shelters are born outdoors, so it’s up to members of the community to help stop the cycle. Contact your local community cat program and ask how you can help!

A Safe Haven for Cats in Need

Pet Haven Litter for Good Recipient

Founded in 1952, Pet Haven is the first foster-based animal shelter rescue organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over the years as the organization has grown and flourished, they have built a team of dedicated individuals who are committed to improving the lives of pets by rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs and cats. Pet Haven is unique in that every cat that comes into their care lives with a foster family until they find their forever homes.

Approximately 3.2 million cats enter shelters every year and this year many shelters have felt an even bigger impact due to COVID-19. As a result, Pet Haven’s cat intake nearly doubled from last year, with more than 500 lives saved so far. Many cats are still in the Pet Haven Foster Home Program, and as we know, more cats mean the need for more litter.

To ensure all their feline guests have everything they need to feel comfortable and at home, Pet Haven reached out to Cat’s Pride for help. Many resources and materials can be expensive and hard to come by, which is why Cat’s Pride Litter for Good program has been essential in assisting Pet Haven with their litter supply. Donated litter from the program has helped Pet Haven save money needed to provide extra care for the cats including food, lodging and medical supplies.

Currently, the Litter for Good program has helped Pet Haven receive more than 24,000 pounds of litter, which is roughly enough for a whole year. You can view the donation delivery to Pet Haven on their YouTube page here.

“Cat’s Pride has been strategic in saving more lives! If we would have had to purchase litter we could not have saved as many as we have,” said Kerry D’Amato, Executive Director of Pet Haven. “The generosity of Cat’s Pride is so incredibly appreciated. I truly cannot thank them enough.”

Fearlessly Saving Cats in Need

Fearless Kitty Rescue: Litter for Good Recipient

In 2012, two women were spending much of their free time volunteering for different animal rescue shelters in the Fountain Hills, Arizona area. In August of that year, they met while volunteering to care for kittens at a Petco, and after getting to know each other well, both women decided it was time to pool their knowledge and talents together to create a no-kill cat organization. Without any time to waste, their free-roaming adoption center, Fearless Kitty Rescue, was opened in September 2012.

Today, Fearless Kitty Rescue is a highly regarded non-profit, no-kill rescue committed to finding homes for homeless and abandoned cats of all ages. The organization has grown to include five employees and 140 volunteers. Right now, their 5,200 sq. ft. facility houses between 65-86 cats at one time and about 22 cats are adopted each month. When their cats and kittens are not at “Kittyville” in their facility, they work with foster families to provide them a loving home for a period of time.

Many resources and materials can be expensive and hard to come by, which is why the Cat’s Pride Litter for Good program has been essential to helping Fearless Kitty Rescue with their litter supply. Donated litter from the program has helped Fearless Kitty Rescue save money needed to provide extra care for the cats including food, lodging, medical supplies, and vet technicians.

Currently, the Litter for Good program has helped them receive over 26,000 pounds of litter.

“We have actively told people to buy Cat’s Pride,” said Kim Kamins, Founder of Fearless Kitty Rescue. “Without the donations and our supporters, we wouldn’t be where we are. Our jaws dropped when we heard how much litter we are eligible to receive.”

Fearless Kitty Rescue was founded on the belief that every cat and kitten should have a chance at a happy, healthy, and FEARLESS life.

Making a Difference One Paw at a Time

PAWSibilities Animal Rescue Litter for Good Recipient

In 1998, a 12-year-old girl was on a mission to rescue every stray cat that wandered onto her mother’s property in Shippack, Pennsylvania. As time went on, her mother’s barn started overflowing with so many stray and lost cats that they could no longer appropriately house them all. Not about to give up on her mission to rescue these helpless cats, she founded PAWSibilities Animal Rescue, a non-profit, no-kill shelter dedicated to serving animals in need.

Today, PAWSibilities has grown to include two locations with six employees and 30 volunteers. PAWSibilities welcomes all domestic animals that have been abused, abandoned, neglected, or simply unloved. They foster all types of animals including cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, chickens, pigs and more.

Many resources and materials can be expensive and hard to come by, which is why the Cat’s Pride’s Litter for Good program has been essential to helping PAWSibilities with their litter supply. Donated litter from the program has helped PAWSibilities save funds in order to be able to take in more animals, provide more medical care and have a larger capacity to house their animals. PAWSibilities currently houses more than 200 cats and through the Litter for Good program, they have received over 13,000 pounds of litter.

PAWSibilities provides a loving and safe environment for all animals they take in from near and far to help find their forever homes. “A 17-year-old cat was recently adopted and it was such a happy day for everyone at the shelter. We know the cat is able to spend the last years of his life in a happy home,” said Kathy Mina, Senior Management at PAWSibilities.

With the help of the Cat’s Pride Litter for Good program and their gracious volunteers, PAWSibilities is able to save hundreds of animals each year. “Many volunteers have been with the rescue for over 10 years. One volunteer comes in every week and cleans the entire cat room,” said Mina.

You too can help animal welfare organizations like PAWSibilities save more cats each year by submitting a shelter nomination for Litter for Good here.

You Helped Keep a Shelter Stocked with Litter for 6 Months!

HELP Humane Society in Belton, Missouri, is an amazing organization that gives hundreds of cats (many with special needs) a warm, comfortable, and healthy home. These cats live their best lives while they await adoption, but if a forever home isn’t found, HELP Humane becomes their home, ensuring that every cat under their roof lives a long and happy life.

When HELP Humane first started in 1996, they were a foster care network. By 2007, they grew to open their own building. Today, HELP houses more than a hundred cats while relying on donations and volunteers. However, doing this incredible, life-saving work is expensive. Food costs them about $1,000 per month, electricity can reach up to $1,000 per month, and veterinarian bills are often as high as $10,000 per month. Now just imagine all the litter they need!

As an animal welfare organization participating in the Litter for Good program, HELP Humane was sent enough nominations to receive 9,600 pounds of donated litter—a six-month supply! Thanks to the generosity of their animal-loving community and everyone who picked up a GREEN JUG of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light, HELP Humane can focus their finances on everything else they need to perform their wonderful work. Amazing!

Cat’s Pride Donates Millions of Pounds of Litter in 2018

When we at Cat’s Pride began the Litter for Good program, we weren’t sure what to expect. The plan was simple: for every GREEN JUG of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light litter bought, we donate a pound to animal welfare organizations across America. By providing this much-needed resource, animal welfare organizations can use the money saved towards efforts such as spay and neuter, adoption events and education programs. While we were excited to share this easy way to help make a difference, we’ve been amazed by the significant impact the Litter for Good program has been able to achieve in just one year.

Thanks to those who purchased THE GREEN JUG throughout 2018, Cat’s Pride has promised close to 5 million pounds of litter to 1,214 animal welfare organizations registered for the Litter for Good program. In total, Cat’s Pride Club members like you sent 17,060 nominations to those making a difference in your communities, stocking them with cat litter so they can focus more of their money on finding forever homes for cats in need.

How can you continue helping your favorite shelter? Start by sending them ANOTHER Litter for Good nomination! Every member of the Cat’s Pride Club gets one nomination per year, and the more nominations a shelter gets, the more donated litter they can receive. That’s why spreading the word about the program can be so impactful!

Take the Barn Cat Rescue of Madison County, TN for example. They received 846 nominations from their supporters, who were inspired by a local news story about how such an important part of their community needed their help. Meanwhile, over at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, supporters sent 341 nominations, resulting in 31,200 pounds of donated litter. And the more who know about the Litter for Good program in your community, the more help your favorite shelter can receive!

Whenever you’re shopping for cat litter, LOOK FOR THE GREEN JUG of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light. Not only is it the best-performing lightweight litter, but every purchase helps animal welfare organizations, who find forever homes for millions of cats in shelters every year.

Help us Clear the Shelters on Saturday, August 18th

Help us Clear the Shelters on Saturday, August 18th.

On this day, adoption fees are waived or reduced at shelters across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

This is the day to create a forever home.

Animal shelters across the U.S. and Puerto Rico are teaming up with NBC and Telemundo to Clear the Shelters on August 18th. And as part of our continued commitment to helping animal welfare organizations, Cat’s Pride is proud to be a national sponsor!

Clear the Shelters is a community-driven, nationwide pet adoption event that matches homeless pets with loving new homes. The program raises awareness about the importance of pet adoption and the overcrowding issues that local animal shelters typically experience in the summer months because of spring litters.

Since its initial launch in 2015, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ Clear the Shelters campaign has helped more than 150,000 pets find their forever homes.

Join us on August 18th, and rescue a pet of your own for a reduced or waived adoption fee.

Liberty Cats

You might not associate cats with American history, but you’d be surprised how many furry felines snuggled with some of history’s most well-known figures!

Abraham Lincoln
Honest Abe wasn’t the only one in his family who didn’t tell a lie. His wife, Mary Todd, was asked what her husband’s hobbies were, and all she said was, “Cats.” President Lincoln kept Tabby and Dixie, the two First Cats, in the White House, and even said Dixie was smarter than his whole Cabinet!

The Siamese Trend
America’s 19th President, Rutherford B. Hayes, set in motion what has since become a popular trend: having a Siamese cat in the White House. Born in Thailand, Siam became the first, but she was followed by Shan, who lived in Gerald Ford’s White House, and Misty Malarky Ying Yang, who lived in Jimmy Carter’s White House. What a name!

Benjamin Franklin’s Sayings
Benjamin Franklin was an extremely prominent figure in the beginnings of America as we know it today, and his sayings are still commonly used. His fondness of cats as a focus for metaphors brought us, “The cat in gloves catches no mice,” “A countryman between two lawyers is like a fish between two cats,” and more. He must have been a big fan!

When you think of cats throughout history, Ancient Egypt probably springs to mind. But let’s not forget the kitties who brought warmth and fun to the White House and beyond before the White House was even built!

“Why Does My Cat…” Part II: Adoption Edition

Adopting a new cat is an absolutely wonderful experience, and right off the bat, your new best friend will be trying to communicate with you, even if it doesn’t seem that way. Whether you just recently rescued a kitty or are thinking about it, this is why a newly adopted cat may…

Hide from You.
Whether entering a totally new home or even just a new room: cats have trepidations about new spaces. By combining some established comforts, like their favorite toys, as well as easing them into it, like introducing them to one new room per day, they’ll go from hiding to basking in no time. (source)

Have a Difficult Time with the Litter Box.
A cat might shy away from a new litter box for a few different reasons. If your cat is having difficulties, try cleaning the litter box more often, putting an additional litter box in the house, or experimenting with different kinds of litters. If the problem continues, bring the cat to the vet — while it’s most likely a simple adjustment problem, it might need medical attention. (source)

Not Seem Excited on Adoption Day.
When you visit a shelter, some cats leap for joy, others are more reserved. This is because different cats have different personalities, just like us humans! If you want a rambunctious cat, you’ll be able to spot them at the shelter, while the calmer, more reserved cats will stick out as well. Find out more info about picking out the perfect companion here. (source)

Not Get Along with the Cats You Already Have.
When you’re a cat lover, it’s tough not to fill up the house with as much fluffy as possible. But sometimes, personalities can clash, especially when it comes to territorial animals. Don’t outright introduce new cats – introduce their smells to each other first, then introduce them face to face through a window. Finally, when they are sharing a space, ensure it’s a neutral space at first. Give them both treats, which is a great way to acclimate to their new housemate(s). (source)

Not Mesh Well with Children.
Cats and kids are a match made in heaven, but it can be bumpy at first. Fortunately, there are tons of ways to make the home life total harmony. Start with establishing clear boundaries, like how children should be gentle with the kitty and to know when to leave the cat alone. For those expecting a new cat, a new kid, or both, this is an important read.

What to expect when you’re expecting a new cat is essential knowledge for anyone looking to adopt and rescue. The key is preparedness, making sure the house is the ideal setting both before, during, and after you bring home your new best friend. It’s immensely rewarding, and more than worth it. In fact, to some of us, it’s not whether or not to have a cat, it’s how many!
