Our Mission

The mission of the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County is to use best practices to find forever homes for animals in our care, and to promote and assist in the humane treatment of all animals. History: The Steuben County Humane Society, now named the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County was founded in 1972. In the early days of our existence, stray animals were housed in cages at the sewer plant. Through many meetings and negotiations, in December 1974, the Humane Society entered into a 50 year lease for land owned by the County of Steuben that would enable them to build a shelter building that would serve us for over 40 years. In 2015, current board members began discussing the need for a new Shelter building. It’s original home which was then over 40 years old, was too small, falling apart, and dangerous to both animals and staff members. The County was not interested in extending the land lease past the original expiration date of 2025. As a result, land was sought, and 7 acres was gifted to the Shelter. In early 2016, a capital campaign was launched to raise money from the community to build a new facility. In a little over 12 months, the campaign goal had been met and the existing Shelter was constructed. The grand opening of the existing Shelter was on September 28th, 2017. The new Shelter has proved to be an incredible asset to not only the Steuben County community, but to other neighboring communities as well. Our animals are housed and cared for in a climate controlled healthy environment which has reduced the spread of illness and disease. 2018 Stats 2,074 cats and dogs entered our shelter. 1,471 animals were adopted. Our volunteers logged over 4,200 hours!!
