A True Story of Your Impact at Ten Lives Club

A True Story of Your Impact

The moment you walk down the glass hallways of Ten Lives Club in Blasdell, NY, you know this shelter is something truly special.

A free-roaming facility specifically designed for the comfort of their 225+ rescue cats, you won’t know whether to join the kitties in their designated play room or just adopt them all. Their incredible staff includes over 200 volunteers and over a dozen employees, all working tirelessly to create an outlet for rescues from all over the country. Since opening their doors in 2001, the folks at Ten Lives Club have impacted the lives of over 30,000 cats.

Two Truckloads of Life-Saving Support

For every green jug of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light sold, a pound of litter is donated to shelters nominated through the Litter for Good program. And as one of the top nominated shelters, Ten Lives Club has earned 46,000 pounds of cat litter so far!

“Being able to say that we don’t have to worry about litter for a year? It’s great,” said Marie, the Executive Director of Ten Lives Club, who went on to point out how the litter you’ve helped donate makes it possible for them to take in more cats. Because not having to worry about buying litter means being able to get more kitties to their 12 adoption sites to improve their likelihood of finding a forever home.

It means Ten Lives Club has more resources for vets, medicine, spays and neuters, employees and beyond, and it’s all thanks to the support of our Cat’s Pride Club members.

Thank you!

Cat’s Pride Club Members to the Rescue!

The Litter for Good program continues to grow, and thanks to help from Cat’s Pride Club members, it’s become the most successful donation initiative in Cat’s Pride history. This year, more than 1,500 shelters have been nominated to receive donated litter, and we’re on pace to donate 5 million pounds of litter by year-end.

So far in 2018, our Top Shelters are:

Donated litter helps shelters thrive in multiple ways: easing the burden of acquiring litter and freeing up resources for additional cat food, medicine, and veterinary services such as spay and neuter programs. Any Cat’s Pride Club member can nominate a shelter, and the more nominations a shelter obtains, the more litter it is eligible to receive.

The Truth About Shelters

The first truth is – we love shelters. America’s shelters help to save millions of companion animals every year. And we think the people who run and volunteer at shelters are heroes! Through our Litter for Good program, Cat’s Pride has made supporting shelters an ongoing part of how we do business. The more we do, the more we understand that shelters need all of our support.

Did you know?

  • Americans love their companion animals!
    • 65% of households have a companion animal, a rate that is growing. And 96% of Americans say we have a moral duty to protect animals and should have strong laws to do so.
    • Americans adopt 30 million animals every year.
  • 47% of American cats are acquired through a shelter or rescue.
    • That’s more than 2.1 million feline friends annually.
  • Over 3 million cats enter shelters each year.
    • But, sadly, over half of those cats are euthanized.
  • Older animals need love too!
    • The senior animal is the fastest growing segment of the pet population.

Think about adopting before going out shopping.

We love all cats, whether the purest of breeds or the most mixed up mutts around. We hope the next time you’re ready to bring a new feline friend into your home, you’ll consider adopting from a shelter near you. Or, if you’re not planning on adopting, there are plenty of ways to support your local shelters which just might save a cat’s life.

Litter for Good

How can we all help save millions of shelter cats? One green jug at a time!

You may have seen that we have launched a major company-wide effort to help America’s shelters save more cats. You see, 3.2 million cats enter shelters every year — less than half of which ever get adopted. And sadly, over half are euthanized. We have been donating litter to shelters for decades, but this  is a statistic that really moved us to think about how we could make a greater difference. So, we’ve rolled out our Litter for Good program.

For every green jug of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light cat litter sold, Cat’s Pride will donate a pound of litter to shelters across America. Two pounds are donated for every box and pail of Fresh & Light litter purchased. With your help, we hope to donate five million pounds of litter a year and twenty million pounds by 2020! So, when you pick up a green jug of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light, you know you are making a difference. Because with every litter donation, a shelter can afford to put more of its budget toward saving cats in its care. It’s that simple.

And this is not a one-time promotion. We know this can’t just be a side project. It needs to be part of who we are as a company. That’s why we are expanding our commitment to Changing Litter for Good by increasing our donation to shelters everywhere and making it easier for you to help too. One pound of litter donated for every green jug sold.

How can you help? It’s simple!

  1. Click this ‘Litter for Good’ link and join the Cat’s Pride Club, then nominate your local shelter to receive free litter. The more nominations your shelter receives, the more litter it is eligible to claim.
  2. Buy a green jug of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light. And every time you do, another pound of litter is added to the total amount donated.
  3. Watch and share this video of our President and CEO, Dan Jaffee showing how the program works and why it’s so important for shelters! The more we can get the word out, the more chances we have to save more cats.

Kitty Translator

Did you know that the seemingly random expressions our cats make on a regular basis often mean something? Whether they’re expressing comfort or discomfort, us humans can become kitty translators — by recognizing some common communications our furry friends love to express. Here’s why cats…

Growl at the TV.

Don’t mix up growling as only an angry gesture: it could be out of fear as well, and the same goes for hissing. When something pops up on the screen, it can startle your cat or make them uneasy. The surprise might cause them to growl or hiss, and they could even be trying to warn you. Learn more here: http://bit.ly/2At7HWL

Give Silent Meows.

The light grumbling produces a sound we can’t hear, but we can see them doing it…and we find it adorable. A theory suggests that cats purr silently for that very reason, to curry favor with humans and receive rewards such as affection or treats. And let’s be honest: it works. Here’s some more info: http://bit.ly/2hdxha0

Purr When They’re Being Groomed.

The arched back, the light purring of satisfaction. Cats do this to let us or other cats and kittens know that they recognize the close connection, an audible indication of their bond. It’s not so much that they’re being groomed, it’s that they’re being touched by someone they love and trust. Find out more: http://bit.ly/2AlwKKz

Sit on Your Laptop.

As mammals, humans need to maintain a consistent internal body temperature of 98.6 °F. As mammals, cats need to do the same, only their ideal internal body temperature is 101.5 °F, which explains why they love the heat radiating off your laptop keyboard. Find out more about their body temp regulation here: http://trib.in/1MEl4oJ

Sleep on Your Head.

Cat owners know what it’s like to wake up with the cat sleeping directly on your face, and there’s more than a couple reasons for this. Most of your body heat escapes from your head and your cat wants to be close but avoid your tossing and turning. An owner’s scent can also put them at ease. One thing is for sure, kitties love to head for the head. Here are some more possible reasons why: http://bit.ly/2n6tJGV

Kitty Costume Ideas

Lost cat. Please help!

It’s every pet owner’s worst nightmare. Your feline family member has gone missing. We hope you never encounter this stressful scenario, but these tips can help you spring into action if you do.

Always be prepared

One of the easiest ways to make sure kitty returns from a mouse hunt or unplanned stroll in the woods is to make it easier for whoever finds your cat to bring her home. An up-to-date tag on your cat’s collar (and/or microchip) is step one. Temperament tags indicate your cat’s mood can give your rescuer added peace of mind for example, “Fearful, not Feral” or “Afraid, not abused”. We also recommend you keep current photos of your cat readily available, but we know you’ll never have a problem with that.

Proceed without delay

Every moment wasted is one less moment you get to spend petting, snuggling or playing. As soon as you suspect your cat is missing, create “MISSING CAT” posters, complete with one of those current photos we talked about earlier. Upload the same poster to all of your social media outlets, and contact your local animal shelter to determine if your cat has already been recovered, or to alert that she may be lost.

Be your own search committee

Take walks around your neighborhood multiple times per day, if time permits. Leave food and water outside in the event she returns while you’re away. Call your cat’s name and rattle her favorite toy as you make your way down each street. And make sure to follow up with local shelters every few days.

Cats want to come home as badly as you want them to, and some have even traveled hundreds of miles on their own, to do just that.

How I Met My Mother: Cats loving their humans and furever homes

There is no bigger moment in cats’ lives than the day they meet their human and find a forever home. Other than the day you bring home tuna. Or when they catch a mouse. We digress; the point is, these cats are ecstatic about their furever homes.

“When you adopted me, you said you’d keep me close to your heart. I guess you weren’t lion .”

“Thank you for bringing me into a furever home. I never knew I’d meet someone who loves naps as much as I do.”

“Just because my eyes are open doesn’t mean I’m not napping. Napping is a lifestyle. It’s a state of mind.”

“I know I look pretty from all angles, but this one has a European chicness to it. Very collar model. Very runway ready. Very celebrikitty.”

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” – white cat.

“We have the best owner ever?” – both cats at the same time.

Sudden realization kitty: “Wait a second. If I pretend to be a parrot, birds might trust me.”

“Psstt. Mom. This is your conscious speaking. Round up all the mice, tuna, and catnip you can find. Further instructions to follow ⏳.”

“As soon as we’re done cuddling up for this photo, I need to go back to reading ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.’ I don’t think I’ve gotten to the good part yet.”

9 Ways to Help Your Cat Beat the Heat This Summer

Even if your cat stays indoors with the AC running, there are plenty of ways the heat can affect your cat. Here’s how to help cats during the dog days of summer.

Tip 1: Refresh water regularly and add ice. Drop a couple cubes in there to cool their bodies from the inside out.

Tip 2: Make bare floors available to them. Hardwood and tile floors are naturally cooler than carpeted surfaces. And we got an inside tip that cats like to lie down.

Tip 3: Place a fan on the floor or aim the AC downwards. Let your cat feel the wind in his hairs. All 2 million of them.

Tip 4: Brush them regularly. Thicker coats = hotter bodies. True for humans and cats alike.

Tip 5: Take them to the groomer. Take a little off the top. Many cats love a lion’s cut in the summer months. They get to look cool AND feel cool.

Tip 6: Keep playtime to morning or evening. Playing in the heat can be exhausting. We know from experience.

Tip 7: Draw the curtains. More shade = Less heat plus better sleeping.

Tip 8: Keep them out of the car. Never leave your cat in your car without you for any amount of time. Any necessary trips should be short, and bring some water.

Tip 9: Keep an extra eye on them. If you see your cat acting erratically, call or visit your vet.

Summertime is the best, but it can also be brutally hot. Make sure you give some extra love and care, because you know they’ve earned it.

What to have ready in your Cat First Aid Kit

Cats may have nine lives, but it’s up to us to help them hold on to all of them. Here’s what you should have on hand in case of a kitty emergency, and remember—always contact your vet prior to taking any first-aid precautions.

Organization

Keep a contact list at the ready with your veterinarian’s information and the poison control center phone number. Make sure to have a cat carrier readily available and a storage container with the First Aid Kit items listed below so you’re not searching for something in an emergency.

Bodyguards

Have bandages and gauze handy in case your cat cuts itself or gets scratched. Also, keep in mind that cats don’t always know that you’re trying to help them, so have a muzzle on hand for your protection, a towel to cover their claws, and a cat harness handy so you can help them despite their “self-defense” reactions and thwart an escape attempt.

Medicine cabinet

3% hydrogen peroxide and a needleless syringe or eyedropper is necessary if your cat ever swallows non-caustic toxins. Be sure to contact Poison Control in the event of your kitty swallowing a potential poison prior to administering first aid. It’s also helpful to keep a thermometer, eyewash, and swabs on hand.

Always contact your vet first in case of an emergency. You can also take a class to learn pet first aid and CPR, because being equipped with pet-safety knowledge and your Cat First Aid Kit may help save one of their nine lives!
